ABSTRACT : Data from 2,439 trees sampled through out the climatic range of Pinus denszflora in Kangwon Province, Korea were used to derive three taper equations from Max and Burkhart, Kozak, and Lee functions. Performance of the equations in predicting stem diameter and tree volume was evaluated with fit and validation statistics and distribution of residuals on predicted values. Kozak function was found to be superior to other functions and selected for the best taper equation. A bark thickness equation was also derived from 300 trees subsampled. These two equations and stem merchantability standard were used to develop a system to predict total and merchantable stem volume inside and outside bark, and corresponding four volume tables were constructed from
the system.

Key words : Pinus densiflora, tree taper equation, tree volume, bark thickness equation, volume tables
